On Tuesday, March 11, 2025, the long-awaited construction of the I/33 – Náchod – bypass road was officially launched. This strategic infrastructure project, the preparation of which took almost 17 years, aims to improve the traffic situation and improve the quality of life of the residents of Náchod.

The ceremonial cornerstone laying took place with the participation of the Minister of Transport Martin Kupka, the General Director of the Roads and Motorways Directorate Radek Mátl, the representative of the State Transport Infrastructure Fund Zbyňek Hořelica, the Hetman of the Hradec Králové Region Petr Koleta, the Mayor of Náchod Jan Birke, representatives of the contractors and many other guests. Each of the participants emphasized the importance of this investment for the region, its impact on improving traffic flow and benefits for the quality of life of the residents in a short speech.

The ceremony was also attended by representatives of the Glacensis Euroregion from both the Czech and Polish sides, including its chairman Czesław Krecichwost. The mayors of the partner cities from Poland – Kudowa-Zdrój and Polanica-Zdrój – were also present. The transport connection of the border region is a key issue for residents on both sides of the border, and the Náchod bypass is an important step towards improving the transport situation not only in the city, but also in the broader context of the Czech-Polish border. The activities of the Glacensis Euroregion and its representatives play an important role in representing the needs of residents and negotiating further connections with key road networks in the Czech Republic and Poland. The Náchod bypass will take over transit traffic, bypassing urbanized areas of the city and significantly reducing the traffic load on the city centre. Every day, around 30,000 vehicles pass through Náchod, including 6,000 trucks, which causes noise, exhaust emissions and a hazard to pedestrians and drivers.

A quote from the mayor of Náchod, Jan Birke:

“For Náchod, this is truly a historic moment. After many years of preparation and overcoming many obstacles, we have finally managed to start building the bypass that our city has been waiting for for over two decades. This investment has been part of the spatial development plan since 1997, an incredible 28 years. Anyone who has ever been stuck in an endless traffic jam on the main road knows how much this construction is needed. Good things come to those who can wait. And today we have waited! The bypass will significantly improve the quality of life of our residents, reduce noise, exhaust emissions and, above all, increase safety. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the implementation of this investment – without their efforts, we would not be witnessing the start of this long-awaited construction today.”

Quote from the chairman of the Polish part of the Glacensis Euroregion, Mr. Czesław Kręcichwost:

"I congratulate the mayor of Náchod, Jan Birke, for his perseverance and belief in success. For a good local government official, there are no impossible tasks that serve the daily quality of life of residents. The decision to start the construction of the Náchod bypass is of particular importance not only for improving communication in the Czech Republic, but is also a determinant of the direction for the Polish side during the modernization of road No. 8."
